manager overrides recorded with a reason
Retail hiring runs at a volume where most applicants hear nothing at all. That silence is the part candidates remember, and in retail the applicant is very often also the customer standing in the store the following week.
Tarnow operates dozens of stores, each hiring on its own timetable. Each one faced the same overflow of applications every time a shift opened up.
The cost of saying nothing
Tarnow received far more applications than any store manager could review. The overflow was handled the way overflow usually is: by not being handled. Candidates were left to work out for themselves that they had not been chosen.
Nobody had decided on that as a policy. It was simply what happened every week, across every store. The volume outran the reading time a manager had left over from running a shop floor.
Store managers knew the silence was a problem. None of them had a way to answer several hundred applicants a month. Each was already running a rota, a delivery schedule and a shop floor that still needed attention.
A single seasonal wave could bring 200 applications to one store for a dozen open shifts. Reading each one properly, on top of a normal week, was never realistic for one manager working alone.
A first-round answer for everyone
Tarnow uses Yardstick Agents to give every application a structured first review against the criteria the role declared. Each applicant gets a real answer within a predictable window, instead of an unacknowledged form.
An answer is not always an invitation to interview. It can be a decline, a hold for a later opening, or a redirect to a nearby store with the shift pattern the candidate asked for. What it is not, any more, is nothing.
The review runs the same day an application arrives. The answer reaches a candidate while they are still deciding between offers, before they have accepted one elsewhere. Store managers no longer see the overflow at all; they see a queue already sorted against the criteria they set.
The same criteria in every store
The rubric is set once and applied the same way in each location. A candidate declined in one store can be considered for another without reapplying. Store managers can still overrule it, and it is recorded when they do.
The numbers behind the answer
Every retail applicant now gets a first-round answer within 72h of applying, down from an open-ended wait that in busy weeks ran past a month. The volume of applications has not dropped; the silence has.
Of the applicants declined for their original role, 22% are redirected to a shift at a nearby store rather than simply turned away. 100% of manager overrides to the standard review are recorded with a reason attached.
Final in-person interviews are still scheduled by the store manager, by phone. It is the one part of the process Tarnow has kept entirely manual, on purpose.
What they are doing next
Tarnow is extending the same first-round answer to its seasonal hiring, where the overflow used to be worse and the silence lasted longest.
