Candidates are rarely lost to a rejection. They are lost in the gap between the applicant tracking system and the hiring manager who has not opened it since the role went live.
Orvent, a technology company, kept that system tidier than most. The gap opened anyway, in the days between a completed screening and the moment someone senior actually looked at it.
The gap in the handover
Orvent’s ATS was well kept. Screening completed, candidates advanced, notifications sent on schedule. Those notifications went to an inbox the hiring manager triaged on Fridays, along with everything else that had piled up that week.
Four days is long enough for a strong engineer to accept another offer. The ATS recorded that outcome as a withdrawal, not as a delay. The delay itself never showed up anywhere that got reviewed. The team kept asking why candidates had gone quiet, when the real question was why an answer had taken four days to arrive.
Closing the handover
Orvent connected its ATS to the Yardstick API, so a completed screening reaches the hiring manager where they already work. The reasoning arrives attached to it, rather than as a link to go and find later. The connection updates within minutes of a screening finishing. The delay Orvent had been chasing turned out to sit between systems, not inside either one.
The manager sees the criteria, the evidence and the score in one place. From there, they can advance or decline a candidate. The ATS stays the system of record. It stopped being the place a candidate had to be fetched from.
No team was asked to move to a new tool for this. The integration runs one way, into the surface each group already lives in. That is the only version of this that survives contact with a busy week.
The decision still sits with the manager
The integration does not advance or decline anyone by itself. It hands the hiring manager the same evidence the screening produced, and the manager decides from there. Nothing is rejected automatically. The reasoning behind every decision is recorded in the same place the screening lives, not in a separate email thread.
What changed for hiring managers
Completed screenings now reach a hiring manager within 24h on average, down from as long as four days under the old handover. That is the gap the candidates were actually being lost in.
Every one of those screenings, 100% of them, arrives with the criteria and evidence attached, alongside the score. The manager judges from that material, not the score alone. Engineering candidates lost to a competing offer before anyone reviewed them have fallen -70%.
The integration does not decide anything on the hiring manager’s behalf. It does not shorten the screening itself either. What it removed was the wait between a finished screening and a human looking at it.
Closing the same gap for internal moves
Orvent is extending the same connection to its internal mobility postings. The same handover gap was quietly costing it candidates who never left the company at all.
